Prestige classes are classes that have requirements other than alignment restrictions that must be met before a player character can gain levels in the class, as opposed to base classeswhich are open to all player characters of allowed alignments. These powerful classes grant characters unique new abilities unavailable to the base classes.
A prestige class cannot be chosen for a starting character; it must be earned through careful advancement. For example, some classes require a certain number of ranks in one or more skillswhile others require the ability to cast arcane spells.
The requirements for each prestige class are listed in the article for that class. Prestige classes are limited to 10 class levels through character level Starting with character level 21, prestige classes can advance beyond level 10 at which point they are considered epic classes with no further limitations.
A prestige class is not counted for the multiclass penalty. All but one of the prestige classes implemented in Neverwinter Nights were provided by the expansion packsand are among the few things that may require the first expansion pack specifically.
Most other additions — such as skills and spells — from the first expansion pack were also included in the second.
The prestige classes that are available only if Shadows of Undrentide is installed are arcane archerassassinblackguardHarper scoutand shadowdancer. Special : Consume Hoard: A would-be dragon ascendant must eat its hoard to begin the process of divine ascension. Its hoard must have a value of at leastgp, but the dragon cannot choose to eat justgp and leave the rest alone—it must consume its entire hoard. Weapon and Armor Proficiency : A dragon ascendant gains no proficiency with any weapons, armor, or shields.
Awesome Aura Ex : A dragon ascendant loses its innate frightful presence, replacing it with a special fear aura. The dragon can choose to exclude its own allies from the effect of its aura. Creatures that fail their saving throws are shaken, while those that succeed are immune to the effect of that dragon's aura for 24 hours.
If the dragon attacks or charges, shaken creatures must attempt a second Will save same DC or become frightened. When a dragon ascendant reaches 5th level, it can choose to modify its aura to inspire resolve in its allies and dread in its enemies. The dragon's foes must succeed on a Will saving throw or take a —4 penalty on attack rolls, saves, and checks. When a dragon ascendant reaches 10th level, it gains a third option for its aura.
The dragon can cause affected creatures to become dazed, simply staring at the dragon in fascinated awe, if they fail their Will saves. As with the fear aspect of the aura, the dragon can choose to exclude its allies from the effects of the aura. All uses of a dragon's awesome aura are mind-affecting effects. Hit Point Increase Ex : At 2nd level, and every two levels thereafter, a dragon ascendant gains 1 hit point per Hit Die it possesses, including all its dragon Hit Dice and those gained from class levels.
This benefit can never increase a dragon's hit points above the maximum for its Hit Dice and Constitution bonus. At 12th level, a dragon ascendant's hit points are equal to the maximum for its Hit Dice and Constitution bonus. Transmutation Immunity Ex : At 3rd level, a dragon ascendant gains immunity to polymorphing, petrification, and any other attack that would alter its form.
Any shape-altering powers or spells the dragon has work normally on itself. Increased Damage Reduction Su : At 4th level, a dragon ascendant's damage reduction can be overcome only by epic weapons. At 8th level, the amount of the dragon's damage reduction the number before the slash is increased by 5.
Lifewarding Ex : At 6th level, a dragon ascendant is no longer vulnerable to attacks that cause energy drain, ability drain, or ability damage. Deflection Bonus Su : At 7th level, a dragon ascendant gains a deflection bonus to its Armor Class equal to its Charisma bonus, if any.
Iron Mind Ex : At 9th level, a dragon ascendant becomes immune to mind-affecting effects charms, compulsions, phantasms, patterns, and morale effects. He is not proficient with any other weapons, nor is he proficient with any type of armor or shields.
Dragon riders develop a strong bond with their mounts that allows the two to work together. The following are class features for the dragon rider prestige class. All these special features function only when a dragon rider is riding his preferred mount see below.
A dragon rider counts a dragon's Effective Character Level as being 3 lower than its actual value. The dragon rider cannot attract a cohort whose Effective Character Level counting the -3 adjustment is higher than his total levels this is an exception to the normal rule, which states that the cohort must be lower than the character's level.
First, the dragon rider must use the Leadership feat to gain an appropriate dragon as a cohort. If the character already has a special mount, familiar, or animal companion, he suffers a -2 penalty on his Leadership score. A dragon will not agree to serve anyone whose alignment opposes its own. The dragon rider may have only one dragon cohort at any one time, and either part ymay sever the relationship at any time.
Once the relationship ends, the mount loses any benefits it gained according to Table A dragon cohort ages but does not gain experience. Most dragon cohorts are at least of young age.
Wyrmling and very young dragons are too young to serve as cohorts, as they are either still under the care of their parents or too immature to deal with the symbiotic relationship required between a dragon rider and his mount. Red and gold dragons tend to be amenable to the cohort relationship by the time they are very young. Dragons older than adult age make poor cohorts, since they are unable or unwilling to bind themselves to a humanoid an obviously lesser being for an extended period of time.
Also, in order for the dragon rider and dragon to gain all the benefits of the prestige class, the dragon must be capable of bearing the rider, the same as a typical mount.
The dragon must be at least one size category larger than the rider. This means that Small riders can actually use their cohorts as mounts earlier than their Medium counterparts. The mount must also be strong enough to bear the rider aloft. As a quadruped, a dragon can carry more than the normal weight of a creature with its size and Strength; however, flying creatures can carry weight aloft only up to their maximum light load.
The dragon rider must spend a minimum of seven days training with his cohort before any benefits accrue. Thereafter, the dragon gains the advantages listed on Table based on the dragon rider's level. The dragon gains no abilities other than those listed, though it is considered a bonded companion for abilities and spells that affect bonded relationships.
Additionally, the dragon rider has a number of obligations to his mount. First, the dragon needs a suitable lair. Dragons not provided with a suitable lair will certainly rebel against their riders. Secondly, the dragon must be provided with treasure to keep in its lair. A minimum hoard of 1, gp value of treasure per Hit Die of the dragon is typical, with the exact makeup depending on the type and likes of the dragon.
The dragon is not keeping treasure safe for its rider, the treasure belongs to the dragon, who will not part with its treasure easily. Finally, and most important, the dragon must be treated with the respect that a creature of its Intelligence, power, and stature commands.
Even lawful good dragons are willful creatures with their own desires and needs. If the dragon rider meets all these requirements and successfully attracts a dragon cohort, the dragon gains certain benefits, gleaned from training with the dragon rider see Table Dragon Rider's Mount for benefits.
If the dragon rider and dragon part ways either through mutual decision, the death of the rider, or other eventthe dragon loses the bonuses at a rate of -1 per week, until the dragon's normal statistics are reached.Edit this Page All pages with an unattributed image. The path of the Dragon is one known by few, and that is open to even fewer.
To become a Dragon, you must first understand what it is you're fighting, what it is that's wrong with humanity, and what it is that's wrong with you. Most often, you cannot choose to become one, instead you are chosen by a current one, often by one who is beginning to near the end of his life. The training that is taught to a Dragon is often filled with pain, both emotional and physical, as they must sever themselves from any friends or family, and they must temper themselves for battle.
Aura Of Terror Su : The task of the Dragon is more than many mortal minds can comprehend, causing them to fear even the air around him, which feels of decay and destruction.
As a standard action, a Dragon can exude an aura of fear in a radius of 10 feet per class level. Once activated, this aura lasts one round per class level. The dragon may use this ability once per day per class level. Culling Blow : The blade of the Dragon strikes true against those who must fall to preserve the balance, especially those who are weak of mind. Whenever a Dragon strikes a creature or object that has been affected by one of his auras, he deals an additional 1d6 points of damage.
This only applies to melee attacks, and only to the first attack in a round. This damage increases by an additional 1d6 points of damage at 4th level, and again at 6th and 8th.
Control Weather Sp : It is said, wherever the Dragon walks, rain pours from the sky, that the very seas rise up in his aid, and that the wind always blows in his favor. Starting at 3rd level, the Dragon may use Control Weather once per day as a spell-like ability as a druid of his class level.
He gains an additional use of it at 6th level,and again at 9th. As a standard action, a Dragon can exude an aura of decaying energy in a radius of 10 feet per class level. Any object within the radius of the aura, or carried into the radius, is treated as if it's Hardness was 1 point lower per level of Dragon. Items effected remain this way for 10 minutes per class level, even if they are carried out of the aura, of the aura moves.
Unraveling Harmonics Of The Blade Ex : The power of decay is great, but the Dragon's destructive might also stems from his great proficiency with a blade, allowing him to pinpoint the weak spots in objects, and to exploit them. At 7th level, whenever the Dragon attempts to break or smash an object, or when he deals damage to a construct, he deals additional damage equal to his Charisma modifier.
Aura Of Mind-Breaking Su : The pure terror that a Dragon inspires can often lead to the utter destruction of a bystander's mind, a trait that Dragons have learned to use to their advantage. As a standard action, a Dragon can exude an aura of utterly terrifying fear in a radius of 10 feet per class level.
The epic Dragon gains a bonus feat selected from the list of epic Dragon feats every other levels after 10th. Combat: A Dragon prefers to be a front-line combatant, using his enemy's fear to gain an edge. Advancement: Dragons are warriors, no matter what else. A Dragon is best off continuing along the path of the destroyer, focusing on improving their martial might, while building on their fear-based abilities.
Resources: The Dragon is a loner, and no amount of companions can change that. Even in a party of adventurers, they typically keep to themselves, using their allies as support until they lack the need for them, at which point they usually abandon or slay them. A Dragon is a great bringer of destruction and chaos, as such they are feared by those who don't understand them, and even if they didthe Dragon would still kill them anyway.
NPC Reactions: A Dragon is usually met with two emotions when encountered by an anyone who is weaker than them: anger, and to a greater extent, fear.
Whenever possible, Dragons are slain on sight. Characters with ranks in Knowledge Arcana can research Dragons to learn more about them. When a character makes a skill check, read or paraphrase the following, including information from lower DCs.
Dragons are the bringers of the apocalypse in many ways, at least for civilized races. Dragon NPCs seek might seek to kill the PCs because they see them as a threat to their campaign of purification, or they might seek to train one as their own. Adaptation: While the Dragon will work in many campaigns, perhaps in some they are the followers of Chronepsis, the dragon that watches all. In such cases, consider making the Dragons into his minions, who believe that they must rebalance the world after the reign of man.

As a result, the blood of dragons runs through the veins of many races. For some, this heritage manifests as a sorcerous bloodline and a predilection for magic; for others, however, the power of their draconic ancestors becomes an obsession. Spellcasters who embrace their draconic heritage and learn to channel their abilities can become dragon disciples, fearsome warriors who possess not only the repertoire of an accomplished sorcerer but also the ability to unleash the furious power of dragons upon their foes.
As dragon disciples discover the power of their forebears, they can learn to breathe fire, take flight on leathery wings, and—at the pinnacle of their abilities—assume the form of a dragon. Although they are rare, dragon disciples can be found in any land where dragons interact with mortals. Role : With the magic of a spellcasting class at their disposal, dragon disciples can assume the typical role of a magic-user, hampering the movement of the enemy and hurling damage-dealing spells at their opponents.
Dragon disciples' draconic abilities, however, make these versatile spellcasters even more formidable, as they use their breath weapons and flight to destroy their foes directly. Alignment : Dragon disciples can be of any alignment, although they tend to be more chaotic than lawful. Those dragon disciples that assume the traits of chromatic dragons, such as bestial white and fearsome red dragons, have a proclivity for evil.
Conversely, those that take after the metallic dragons, such as stoic brass and chivalric gold dragons, are often of good alignments. Requirements To qualify to become a dragon disciple, a character must fulfill all the following criteria.
Race : Any nondragon. Skills : Knowledge arcana 5 ranks. Languages : Draconic. Spellcasting : Ability to cast 1st-level arcane spells without preparation. If the character has sorcerer levels, he must have the draconic bloodline. If the character gains levels of sorcerer after taking this class, he must take the draconic bloodline. Hit Die : d Weapon and Armor Proficiency : Dragon disciples gain no proficiency with any weapon or armor.
Spells per Day : At the indicated levels, a dragon disciple gains new spells per day as if he had also gained a level in an arcane spellcasting class he belonged to before adding the prestige class. He does not, however, gain other benefits a character of that class would have gained, except for additional spells per day, spells known if he is a spontaneous spellcasterand an increased effective level of spellcasting.
If a character had more than one arcane spellcasting class before becoming a dragon disciple, he must decide to which class he adds the new level for purposes of determining spells per day. Blood of Dragons : A dragon disciple adds his level to his sorcerer levels when determining the powers gained from his bloodline.
If the dragon disciple does not have levels of sorcerer, he instead gains bloodline powers of the draconic bloodline, using his dragon disciple level as his sorcerer level to determine the bonuses gained.
He must choose a dragon type upon gaining his first level in this class and that type must be the same as his sorcerer type. This ability does not grant bonus spells to a sorcerer unless he possesses spell slots of an appropriate level.
Such bonus spells are automatically granted if the sorcerer gains spell slots of the spell's level. Natural Armor Increase Ex : As his skin thickens, a dragon disciple takes on more and more of his progenitor's physical aspect.
At 1st, 4th, and 7th level, a dragon disciple gains an increase to the character's existing natural armor if anyas indicated on Table: Dragon Disciple. These armor bonuses stack. Ability Boost Ex : As a dragon disciple gains levels in this prestige class, his ability scores increase as noted on Table: Dragon Disciple. These increases stack and are gained as if through level advancement. Bloodline Feat : Upon reaching 2nd level, and every three levels thereafter, a dragon disciple receives one bonus feat, chosen from the draconic bloodline's bonus feat list.
Dragon Bite Ex : At 2nd level, whenever the dragon disciple uses his bloodline to grow claws, he also gains a bite attack. Upon reaching 6th level, this bite also deals 1d6 points of energy damage.Gain powers to help you defeat mighty dragons such as Advanced Favored Enemy, the ability to more easily overcome a dragon's Frightful Presence, and a few other skills that assist you in gaining the upper hand against even the most ancient of dragons.
