It took place between October and January The Soviet defensive effort frustrated Hitler 's attack on Moscowthe capital and largest city of the Soviet Union.

Moscow was one of the primary military and political objectives for Axis forces in their invasion of the Soviet Union. The German strategic offensivenamed Operation Typhooncalled for two pincer offensivesone to the north of Moscow against the Kalinin Front by the 3rd and 4th Panzer Armiessimultaneously severing the Moscow—Leningrad railwayand another to the south of Moscow Oblast against the Western Front south of Tulaby the 2nd Panzer Armywhile the 4th Army advanced directly towards Moscow from the west.

Initially, the Soviet forces conducted a strategic defence of the Moscow Oblast by constructing three defensive beltsdeploying newly raised reserve armiesand bringing troops from the Siberian and Far Eastern Military Districts. As the German offensives were halted, a Soviet strategic counter-offensive and smaller-scale offensive operations forced the German armies back to the positions around the cities of OryolVyazma and Vitebskand nearly surrounded three German armies.

Operation Barbarossathe German invasion plan, called for the capture of Moscow within four months. On 22 JuneAxis forces invaded the Soviet Union, destroyed most of the Soviet Air Force on the ground, and advanced deep into Soviet territory using blitzkrieg tactics to destroy entire Soviet armies. On 15th of JulyGerman forces captured Smolenskan important stronghold on the road to Moscow. In part to address these risks, and to attempt to secure Ukraine's food and mineral resources, Hitler ordered the attack to turn north and south and eliminate Soviet forces at Leningrad and Kiev.

For Hitler, the Soviet capital was secondary, and he believed the only way to bring the Soviet Union to its knees was to defeat it economically. He felt this could be accomplished by seizing the economic resources of Ukraine east of Kiev.

The move was successful, resulting in the loss of nearlyRed Army personnel killed, captured, or wounded by 26 September, and further advances by Axis forces. With the end of summer, Hitler redirected his attention to Moscow and assigned Army Group Centre to this task. The forces committed to Operation Typhoon included three infantry armies the 2nd4thand 9th [22] supported by three Panzer tank Groups the 2nd3rd and 4th and by the Luftwaffe ' s Luftflotte 2.

Up to two million German troops were committed to the operation, along with 1,—2, tanks and assault guns and 14, guns. German aerial strength, however, had been severely reduced over the summer's campaign; the Luftwaffe had lost 1, aircraft destroyed and 1, damaged.

Facing the Wehrmacht were three Soviet fronts forming a defensive line based on the cities of Vyazma and Bryanskwhich barred the way to Moscow. The armies comprising these fronts had also been involved in heavy fighting. Still, it was a formidable concentration consisting of 1, men, 1, tanks and 7, guns.

Extraordinary industrial achievements had begun to replace these, and at the outset of Typhoon the VVS could muster aircraft, of which were bombers. Once Soviet resistance along the Vyazma-Bryansk front was eliminated, German forces were to press east, encircling Moscow by outflanking it from the north and south.

Continuous fighting had reduced their effectiveness, and logistical difficulties became more acute. General Guderiancommander of the 2nd Panzer Army, wrote that some of his destroyed tanks had not been replaced, and there were fuel shortages at the start of the operation. Further information: Battle of Bryansk The German attack went according to plan, with 4th Panzer Group pushing through the middle nearly unopposed and then splitting its mobile forces north to complete the encirclement of Vyazma with 3rd Panzer Group, and other units south to close the ring around Bryansk in conjunction with 2nd Panzer Group.

The Soviet defenses, still under construction, were overrun, and spearheads of the 3rd and 4th Panzer Groups met at Vyazma on 10 October When managing a project, it is important to develop a clear understanding of the customers' requirements and their priority.

Many projects start with the barest headline list of requirements, only to find later the customers' needs have not been fully understood. Once there is a clear set of requirements, it is important to rank them. This ranking helps everyone customer, project manager, designer, developers understand the most important requirements, in what order to develop them, and what not to deliver if there is pressure on resources.

The o's in MoSCoW are added to make the acronym pronounceable and are often in lowercase to show they don't stand for anything.

MoSCoW Method

MoSCoW as a prioritisation method is used to decide which requirements to complete first, which must come later and which to exclude. Unlike a numbering system for setting priorities, the words mean something and make it easier to discuss what's important. The must requirements need to provide a coherent solution, and alone lead to project success.

The must requirements are non-negotiable. Failure to deliver even one of them will likely mean the project has failed. The project team should aim to deliver as many of the should requirements as possible. Could and would requirements are nice to have and do not affect the overall success of the project. Could requirements are the first to go if the project timeline or budget comes under pressure. It is essential to have a clear set of prioritised and agreed requirements with the customer, alongside the overall objective, quality criteria, timescale and budget if you are going to deliver a successful project.

The recommended method for setting priorities is MoSCoW. When you realise that you have the power to change your beliefs and remove a limiting factor that has been constraining you, you have an AHA! The art of project scheduling is based on experience and the more experience you have, the more accurate your schedule will be. Hiring a good project manager means you can sit back and relax knowing that the project tasks are being taken care of in a professional, productive and profitable manner.

MoSCoW stands for must, should, could and would: M - Must have this requirement to meet the business needs S - Should have this requirement if possible, but project success does not rely on it C - Could have this requirement if it does not affect anything else on the project W - Would like to have this requirement later, but delivery won't be this time.

Great article. Is it by demonstrating these must-have requirements from a timeline perspective and asking the client to sign off the expected timeline or reduce some of the must-haves -- would that be the basic way to deal with such a situation?

Hi Sean, Thanks for your feedback and your questions. Exactly, although I would usually ask a few questions to qualify. Sometimes, it is because the requirements are at a level where not everything within those is necessary.

For instance, what appears to be "all users" may in fact only be a large subset, allowing some to be excluded because they have an alternate method of access. Sometimes the integration of an ancillary system that is being migrated that doesn't current participate in SSO is expected to change to SSO, but it can be better to leave authentication as is until the main system is up and then tackle SSO as a separate project for the ancillary system. Sometimes MoSCoW is revisited during elaboration of requirements and becomes part of scope change.

Great method. Thanks for explaining it so well here. Would vs Won't debate is not relevant.Create an Account - Increase your productivity, customize your experience, and engage in information you care about.
